Newcastle United know a successful academy could save the clubs millions of pounds in the long term.

Newcastle United have been shackled by the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules in recent years, resulting in a disappointing January and summer transfer window.

The Magpies were at risk of breaching the regulations over the summer, which would have resulted in a hefty points deduction.

However, the club acted quickly and raised cash through the sales of exciting young duo Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson before the PSR cut-off date of June 30th.

Eddie Howe admitted he was “really disappointed” that Newcastle had to sell the duo, but the financial regulations unfortunately place more value on academy talent as they represent pure profits to club accounts.

Emphasising the growth of Newcastle’s academy has been a priority since the PiF takeover in 2021.

Newcastle academy has produced two ‘elite players’

Newcastle are attempting to “bust PSR” and their latest step was to hire a full-time psychologist to work with the loans team and player recruitment.

It is said that Newcastle want to improve the overall loan experience for young players as they attempt to replicate the success of Minteh’s sale to Brighton which generated £27m in profit.

Howe has now spoken about the success of Newcastle’s academy and he believes there have already been two “elite players” produced at the club.

Speaking to The Chronicle, Howe said: “We are working in tandem with the Academy. I have a really good relationship with Steve Harper and I have been down to the Academy a couple of times in recent weeks to spend some time with the staff.

“It is in great hands and there are some really passionate people there and great coaches. I think the work is taking place to try to produce future superstars for Newcastle.

“Everyone wants the same thing. It has done already, you look at the players that have come through in recent years.

Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley there have been some outstanding individuals. Those players? They are elite players. So I think it has done really, really well.”

Newcastle will want to keep hold of ‘future superstars’

Howe stated that Newcastle are working to “produce future superstars”, but the next step for the club is keeping hold of them.

Focusing on the youth is fantastic news and there are already three Newcastle academy gems impressing staff that could make their senior debut this season.

Newcastle have thankfully kept hold of Miley and the teenage midfielder is set to return from injury shortly to strengthen Howe’s side.

But with Anderson, he was a homegrown talent who was progressing well and was on the brink of a breakthrough season with the first team.

He was sold to Nottingham Forest for £35m to evade PSR. Anderson has admitted it was “tough” to leave Newcastle, and the focus should now be making sure Newcastle are never put in that position again.
