Several Newcastle United heroes have made it to double digits in the past, and now Eddie Howe’s current group of players can add to their appearance tally.
After a year out, the Magpies are back in the Champions League, and have been treated to a tasty home tie for their return.
Newcastle United welcome Barcelona to St James’ Park for the first time in over 20 years. Some fans will remember the iconic meeting between the two sides in 1997, where Tino Asprilla became a Newcastle legend with his hat-trick against Barca to hand them a truly historic win.
Elsewhere, Newcastle will play the likes of PSG, PSV, Bayern Leverkusen and Athletic Club in what is the first time they will feature in the new league phase of Europe’s premier competition.
Eddie Howe’s players can make as many as eight appearances in the league phase, bringing them closer to Newcastle’s current European record appearance holders.

Newcastle United’s top appearance makers in Europe
The list is based on records in both the Champions League and the UEFA Cup/Europa League proper.
Qualifiers for the competitions have only been included for the UEFA Cup/Europa League in this list, while Inter-City Fairs Cup appearances have not been included.
Alan Shearer is Newcastle’s top scorer in Europe, but Shay Given leads the list with his impressive 42 European appearances. Meanwhile, Shola Ameobi is the only player on the list to have played for Newcastle when the competition was renamed to the Europa League.

Fans will look back on Newcastle’s 2023/24 Champions League campaign with fond memories, despite the Magpies finishing bottom of the group.
Three brilliant trips to Milan, Dortmund and Paris, with Howe’s side picking up two points from those three games.
Elsewhere, Newcastle’s historic 4-1 win against PSG will live long in the memory for all the right reasons, while their draw in Paris will be remembered for all the wrong ones.
That season, only five players had the privilege of saying they appeared in all of Newcastle’s Champions League games.
Those players are:

- Anthony Gordon
- Miguel Almiron
Four of the five players remain on Tyneside, while Almiron completed an emotional move back to Atlanta United in January.
