Alan Shearer is Newcastle United’s top goalscorer in European competition, but the current squad will be looking to write their names into the history books when the club return to Champions League action.
Indeed, Newcastle United are back in the Champions League and have quite the welcome upon their return.
Eddie Howe’s side host Barcelona in the first game of this season’s European campaign, a heavyweight fixture that evokes memories of Tino Asprilla’s famous hat-trick for Newcastle against Barca in 1997.
With the tournament revamped since Newcastle’s last appearance, fans can look forward to at least eight Champions League games in the initial league phase.
That should give players such as Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga plenty of chances to put the ball in the back of the net.
Having said all that, here’s a look at Newcastle’s record goalscorers in major European competition.

Newcastle United’s top scorers in Europe
This list is based on records in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup/Europa League proper.
Qualifiers for those competitions have not been included and neither has the Inter-City Fairs Cup, which Newcastle won in 1969.
Unsurprisingly, Shearer leads the way but Craig Bellamy, Shola Ameobi and Asprilla also boast strong records.
| Player | Goals in the Champions League | Goals in the Europa League/UEFA Cup | Total |
| Alan Shearer | 6 | 20 | 26 |
| Craig Bellamy | 2 | 8 | 10 |
| Tino Asprilla | 3 | 6 | 9 |
| Shola Ameobi | 3 | 3 | 6 |
Newcastle United’s current Champions League goalscorers
Much of the current Newcastle United squad played in the Champions League two seasons ago.
Howe’s side were dealt a particularly difficult hand in that campaign, having been drawn against Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan.
| Player | Champions League goals for Newcastle |
| Dan Burn | 1 |
| Fabian Schar | 1 |
| Joelinton | 1 |
Newcastle finished bottom of their group, but that did not tell the whole story. They thrashed PSG at home and were robbed of the game in the French capital by a hugely controversial VAR decision.
Of the current squad, Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Joelinton have all scored Champions League goals for Newcastle.
