It was a historic night in the Champions League for Newcastle United, but not the kind of history they were hoping for.
The dream was to beat AC Milan and qualify for the knockout stages of the competition for the first time in the club’s history. And that looked like a distinct possibility after Joelinton gave the Magpies the lead.
In the end, a second half comeback from the Serie A giants dumped Newcastle out of the Champions League and brought an end to our European adventure.
It has been an incredible ride, but it is a rollercoaster that has ended in disappointment and heartache.
The defeat meant we finished bottom of the group, just like Manchester United did. For the first time in Champions League history, two English clubs have came bottom of their respective groups.
Despite the agony, there was one small piece of history made that points towards a bright future for the Magpies.

Lewis Miley makes history with Champions League assist
Lewis Miley was named in the Newcastle United starting XI for the seventh game in a row, as he made his first ever Champions League start at St James’ Park. And what an occasion it was for the 17-year-old.
Just like in Paris, he was unfazed by the enormity of the task at hand, and produced yet another glorious display in black and white.
He played a crucial role in the goal too, setting up Joelinton to give St James’ Park lift off.
It was such a clever pass. He took all of the fizz out of Anthony Gordon’s through ball, allowing Joelinton to steady himself and score what is probably his best ever goal in a Newcastle shirt.
It means that Miley now has two assists this season, and this one actually etched his name into the history books.
Miley is now the youngest ever player to get an assist in the Champions League for an English club, replacing Theo Walcott at the top of the pile. The Toon midfielder’s assist came at the age of 17 years and 226 days, bettering Walcott’s effort of 17 years and 250 days when he was with Arsenal.
While the night ended in heartache, it will always be special for Miley. He started a Champions League game for his boyhood club at St James’ Park, and got a historic assist.
It wasn’t enough to advance, but it will certainly not be Miley’s last game on this stage. The ‘little superstar‘ has already proven that he belongs at this level, which means the future is very bright for him and Newcastle United.
