Kieran Trippier is back to being Newcastle United’s first choice right-back in the aftermath of Tino Livramento’s injury.
Eddie Howe has confirmed that Livramento will be absent for six to eight weeks, having avoided a season-ending injury. While it is a shame that the 22-year-old has been ruled out, it could have been a lot worse.
In his absence, Kieran Trippier will be Newcastle’s leading right-back. He has already played a lot this season, with Livramento slotting in on the left. But with Lewis Hall fully fit again, Trippier’s minutes were at risk of decreasing.
That will no longer be the case, and the 35-year-old’s importance to Eddie Howe could be underlined by a new contract.

Newcastle United want Kieran Trippier to sign a new contract
Transfer expert Graeme Bailey has spoken exclusively to Geordie Boot Boys, revealing that Newcastle United are considering offering Trippier a new contract.
His current deal expires in 2026, but the defender could now remain at St James’ Park beyond the current season.
“I think Livramento’s injury will have an impact on Trippier,” he said.
“It’s surprising, but they are considering another deal for Trippier. He seems to have knuckled down, and they are going to have talks over a contract extension.
“Trippier knows his role. He’s very valuable to Newcastle and he will play regularly during Livramento’s absence.”
Kieran Trippier had wanted to leave Newcastle United
During the 2025 summer transfer window, there was no serious talk of Trippier leaving St James’ Park. He was linked with Monaco, but a move did not materialise.
It was a contrast to 2024, when Trippier asked to leave Newcastle United. The veteran made it clear that he wanted out of the club, only for Eddie Howe to block an exit.
That decision went on to be the correct one, with Trippier still proving to have a huge impact on Tyneside despite his age. He made up for it in experience, playing a key role in the Magpies winning the Carabao Cup.
Now aged 35, Trippier is still just as important. He has started the 2025/26 season incredibly well, and will hope to maintain this form during Livramento’s injury layoff.
Despite having a player like Livramento to compete with, Trippier is still getting the minutes he needs. Hopefully that convinces him to stay at St James’ Park, as Newcastle weigh up offering him a contract extension.
