Amid profit and sustainability pressures, one of Newcastle United’s most important figures is being linked with a move away.

But it is not Toon talisman Bruno Guimaraes, nor is it club record signing Alexander Isak. Instead, it is someone behind the scenes at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United Sporting Director Dan Ashworth has been a target for Manchester United for months now, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe eager for him to lead his renaissance at Old Trafford.

The British billionaire’s partial takeover of Manchester United is now official, and it appears that the Red Devils are now pushing ahead with their interest in Ashworth.

Manchester United ready to make Dan Ashworth offer

According to the Telegraph, Manchester United are now ready to make Ashworth an offer for him to head to the North West and leave the Magpies.

The report states that Newcastle United are now braced for the 52-year-old to leave, and are eager for Ashworth to confirm his stance – whether that is staying or going.

The Telegraph add that any deal would cost Man United millions of pounds in compensation, while there would also be a lengthy period of gardening leave, just like there was when Ashworth left Brighton And Hove Albion to join Newcastle.

Huge blow if Newcastle United lose Dan Ashworth

This situation appears to be heading towards a climax very soon. Talk of Ashworth leaving was quite intense in late December and early January, but then things went quiet.

Now the speculation has ramped up again, and it looks like an Ashworth decision is on the horizon.

It will be a big blow if he does leave, as the club worked so hard to bring him in from Brighton. He was viewed as a major hire at the time, and it would be so sad for him to leave after less than two years.

But a more appealing project could soon be offered to him, which may force Newcastle to find a replacement. The Magpies have already done their due diligence in that regard, as they prepare for the worst.

For now, we continue to hope for the best that Dan Ashworth will turn down Manchester United when an offer comes and remain at Newcastle United.
