After losing three times in a row to Newcastle United, Manchester United are considering poaching one of the Magpies’ key backstage figures.

The 2023 Carabao Cup final still brings back bitter memories for Toon fans, but Eddie Howe’s side have been dominant against Man United ever since.

The Magpies won 2-0 at St James’ Park last season as Howe got revenge over Erik ten Hag for his comments, then Newcastle won 3-0 in the Carabao Cup fourth round back in November.

Then it was back to St James’ Park last week, with Anthony Gordon’s goal inflicting further misery on Man United. They were horrendous, as their demise under the Glazers continues.

Change is on the horizon though, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe set to buy a stake in the club and take over the football operations at Old Trafford.

That deal is expected to go through soon, and a new report from TalkSPORT states that Ratcliffe wants to steal one of Newcastle‘s most important figures to kickstart their renaissance.

Manchester United want to steal Dan Ashworth from Newcastle

According to TalkSPORT, Ratcliffe wants to bring Newcastle United Sporting Director Dan Ashworth to Old Trafford.

They state that the British billionaire has been impressed with the job Ashworth has done on Tyneside, while the Newcastle chief has a close relationship with Ratcliffe’s right-hand man Sir Dave Brailsford.

However, TalkSPORT add that Newcastle will do all they can to keep Ashworth, and that the 52-year-old is believed to be happy with where he is right now.

That is excellent news as it would be a huge blow to lose Ashworth, who was recently hailed by former Man United defender Gary Neville. However, it is no surprise that he wants to stay. He is building something special at Newcastle United, and his project is still in its infancy.

Man United certainly do need someone like Ashworth, but their chances of getting the real thing are slim.

As always, they have been too slow. If they really wanted Ashworth, they should have got him before we did from Brighton.

But this Man United are always reactive rather than proactive, which is why they are not going to be able to get Ashworth to fix their mess. Instead, he is focussed on making Newcastle United a footballing powerhouse.
