Newcastle United took all three points back to the North East with a 1-0 win against West Ham.

A second-half strike from Bruno Guimaraes was enough to secure the win for Eddie Howe’s side, despite a lack of quality in the game.

That won’t bother Newcastle United fans one bit, however, with the win moving them back up to sixth in the Premier League table and giving them some much-needed confidence ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

Harvey Barnes replaced Anthony Gordon on the left wing to good effect, the 27-year-old looked threatening all night and was rewarded for his hard work by picking up the assists for Guimaraes’ goal. West Ham United boss Graham Potter believed Newcastle’s goal shouldn’t have stood – claiming Alexander Isak pushed Max Kilman in the back.

Isak was substituted in the second half, with fans concerned he may have picked up a knock during the game, thankfully, Howe reported back a clean bill of health for all of his players.

As fans breathe a sigh of relief that their squad is as fit as it can be in the circumstances, the Magpies did something on Monday that they haven’t done for 73 years.

Newcastle’s 73-year cup streak is broken

Newcastle’s trophy history is not something that fans look back on with much joy. It’s been 56 years since the Magpies won a major honour and 70 years since a domestic trophy returned to Tyneside.

Sunday’s Carabao Cup final gives Newcastle a huge opportunity to end the club’s trophy drought and qualify for European football, those watching will have renewed confidence after a statistic revealed a 73-year streak that was finally broken with Monday’s win.

This will be the first time that Newcastle will go into a major final on the back of a win since 1952 – they beat Aston Villa 6-1 before the FA Cup final – they lost their last four games before finals since.

Fans will have renewed confidence in knowing that Newcastle also won that 1952 cup final following their tune-up win, beating Arsenal 1-0 thanks to a late goal from George Robledo.

That team featured the likes of Jackie Milburn and Joe Harvey, players who etched their names into the history books at Newcastle – the current crop of players can do the exact same at Wembley.

Newcastle have made a habit of breaking streaks this season

The Magpies have endured many highs and lows this campaign, but they can repay the fans for their unrivalled support by winning the Carabao Cup on Sunday.

While the season has been inconsistent, Newcasle have still equalled or broken records.

Howe equalled Kevin Keegan and Rafael Benitez for the most consecutive wins at Newcastle during their remarkable run in all competitions during December and January. The 47-year-old’s record was only snapped when Newcastle were beaten 4-1 to Bournemouth at St James’ Park.

Isak broke Alan Shearer’s record for consecutive Premier League goals during that run, he managed to find the net in eight straight games.

The Swede also overtook Shola Ameobi’s all-time Premier League tally in over 200 fewer games. Isak failed to find the net on Monday in a rather subdued performance but fans will be pleased he is fit enough for the final more than anything.
