Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has been called up to the England squad for the first time.
It’s a huge career milestone for the 32-year-old who has had a long wait before being recognised on the international stage.
Newcastle United have three players in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad thanks to their fine form throughout the season, perhaps nobody is more deserving than Dan Burn.
Toon fans will also see the likes of Anthony Gordon and defender Tino Livramento who will join Burn for the Three Lions’ games against Albania and Latvia later this month. There were fears that Gordon’s red card suspension would prove problematic for his England spot but Tuchel has still opted to choose him.
There was no call-up for Nick Pope this time around, the shot-stopper has struggled between the sticks since returning from injury, battling with Martin Dubravka who enjoyed a fine run in Newcastle’s starting XI in Pope’s absence.
Pope revealed a call with Tuchel earlier in 2025, suggesting he was in contention for a call-up but the German has opted against selecting him on this occasion.
With the England squad now locked in, Newcastle fans have flocked to social media to react to the news.

Newcastle fans react to Dan Burn’s England call-up
Should Burn feature in either of England’s next two games, he will be England’s oldest debutant since 33-year-old Kevin Davies played against Montenegro in 2010.
Burn was picked for his versatility after wowing Tuchel when he watched him during Newcastle’s win against West Ham United on Monday.
With Burn officially part of the Three Lions squad, Newcastle fans have reacted to the news on social media platform X.
“Honestly can’t explain how happy this makes me.” said one Newcastle fan, while another added: “A lad from little old Blyth being called up for England, unreal.”
This fan referred to Burn’s age, saying: “Getting a first call-up at 32 is remarkable, and seeing another Newcastle face in the England setup will always make me smile. Do us proud, Dan.”
“Well deserved, been solid this season and to get your first call-up at 32 shows his quality.” said this proud Newcastle fan.
Another fan added: “Get in lad, absolutely buzzing for the lad. Well deserved.”
Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “If that’s not a recognition of the value of keeping one’s head down, consistently working hard, I don’t know what is. Well deserved in all respects. Big Dan Burn!”

Newcastle transfer target also called up to England squad
Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell is due to have a busy summer with the Magpies tipped to spend big after a year of PSR troubles.
One player who has been heavily linked with a move to Tyneside is Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. The 22-year-old has been sensational this season, keeping 25 clean sheets in the Championship.
Newcastle want to sign Trafford for £30m this summer but have competition from Manchester United for his signature. A boost in the race to sign him is that Newcastle could guarantee Trafford game time, whereas Man United may look to have him as a number two for his first season.
Tuchel has gone rogue with his selection by picking a Championship player, something Gareth Southgate opted against in his eight years as England boss.
As well as playing in the games, Burn, Gordon and Livramento will all have the chance to sell Newcastle to Trafford during their international duty.
