Newcastle United got through to the fifth round of the FA Cup, but it was not easy by any means.

Eddie Howe is eager to win Newcastle United’s first trophy since 1969 and a first domestic honour since 1955.

The Magpies nearly achieved that two years ago but were thwarted by Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.

Newcastle’s win against Birmingham City secured their place in the draw for the fifth round of the FA Cup where they will play Brighton and Hove Albion at St James’ Park in March. A win in that game would put them just one round away from another appearance at Wembley.

While Joe Willock scored a brace in Saturday’s win, it was William Osula who earned the respect of many.

Stan Collymore praised Osula for his performance and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer said Osula ‘did well’ after bagging two assists.

As Newcastle prepare for a difficult run of games, Newcastle fans have taken to social media to voice their opinion on the draw.

Newcastle fans react to drawing Brighton in the FA Cup

The Magpies have already played Brighton at St James’ Park this season, losing 1-0 thanks to a Danny Welbeck goal in the first half. Howe and his players will be keen to avenge that defeat and move one step closer to the FA Cup final.

After the announcement, Newcastle fans reacted to the draw on X.

“It’s harder than people might think There are 4/5 well-coached mid-teams that Howe struggles against every time and Brighton is one of them. If we go through there is a big chance we get an easier draw after.” said one fan. While another added: “Not easy but at least we are home, Brighton have all their eggs in one basket for this one.”

This fan referred to the defeat earlier in the season, saying: “Home draw’s all you can ask for. Should’ve stuffed this lot earlier in the season but couldn’t put the ball in the net after bossing the game and peppering their goal.”

“Good draw. knock a tricky team out and we them one for that robbery earlier in the season,” said this confident Newcastle fan.

Another fan added: “Could have been a lot worse I guess, domestic double is still alive.”

Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “Decent enough draw that. Brighton obviously a very good team, but at home, I fancy us to progress!”

Newcastle going all guns blazing in cup competitions

The Magpies have been nothing short of sensational in the cup competitions this season. They will play in the Carabao Cup final in March and are still in with a chance to reach the FA Cup final in May.

Newcastle can still win the domestic treble, although it does look unlikely due to Liverpool’s gap to other Premier League clubs. Newcastle assistant manager Jason Tindall eased expectations for the Carabao Cup final after claims that the club were too emotional for their last trip to Wembley in 2023.

This cup final feels a lot different to the last one. There are several new players that did not appear in the 2023 final that could be big difference-makers this time around.

Lewis Hall, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento were either cup-tied or played for different clubs that season – if they played it could have been a different story for the Magpies that day.

If Newcastle want to win silverware, they must do it the hard way but there is every confidence that they can achieve what many Toon fans have never witnessed before.
