The amazing milestone only Newcastle United can achieve after Liverpool’s FA Cup exit

Newcastle United survived an early scare to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

It wasn’t easy for Eddie Howe who made nine changes to the Newcastle United side that beat Arsenal just a few days prior, but the Magpies put their name in the hat for the next round of the FA Cup after beating League One leaders Birmingham City 3-2 at St Andrew’s.

A brace from Joe Willock and first half goal from Callum Wilson ensured an early goal from Ethan Laird and a stunner from Tomoki Iwata was all in vain.

Newcastle did not end the game completely unscathed, however. Dan Burn went off injured which added to the Magpies’ already growing injury list.

The win came just four days after Newcastle dominated Arsenal to reach a second Carabao Cup final in three seasons – they will play Liverpool at Wembley Stadium in March.

Liverpool suffered a shock defeat to Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle on Sunday. The defeat meant that Newcastle are now the only team in England that can achieve a monumental milestone.

Newcastle can still win the domestic treble

Liverpool’s loss came as a huge surprise considering just how dominant they have been all season. It was their fourth loss in all competitions and by far the most shocking.

Newcastle’s entertaining win against Birmingham showed that they could still perform despite a number of changes, something Arne Slot’s side can not relate to going off their performance against Plymouth.

Their elimination from the FA Cup now means that Newcastle are the only team that can complete the domestic treble. In theory, they can still win the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Newcastle are sat sixth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Liverpool, so the league title looks unlikely but not completely out of the equation.

Howe is aiming to end the Magpies trophy drought this season. Newcastle’s trophy history has been non-existent for decades – they now have the opportunity to win their first trophy since 1969 and their first domestic trophy since 1955.

Injuries could hamper Newcastle’s trophy chances

While Newcastle are on course for an exceptional milestone, it could all come crashing down after the latest injury crisis. It is beginning to feel all too familiar to last season when the Magpies had a full starting XI of injuries within the squad.

Sven Botman missed the Birmingham game due to a knee problem – Howe confirmed it was not the knee he injured last season but kept him out of the side as a precaution.

Harvey Barnes has been missing since January with a muscle issue. Before Newcastle’s defeat to Fulham, Howe confirmed he would not be back for another two weeks.

Elsewhere, Joelinton is expected to miss ‘weeks’ of action after he was pictured wearing a knee brace following the Fulham loss. It is unknown whether he will be fit before the Carabao Cup final.
