Newcastle United fans got a glimpse at Manchester United’s stadium photos while waiting for PIF’s decision on St James’ Park.

On Tuesday morning, Manchester United confirmed their plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium as part of a wider regeneration project.

The design photos revealed a very unique design that included a net-like umbrella over the venue. The project is set to be completed by 2030.

The timeline of Newcastle United’s own stadium project could share a similar timeline but PIF are yet to finalise their decision. Newcastle could expand St James’ Park or decide to build a new £1.2bn stadium with a capacity of up to 70,000.

PIF flew to Newcastle to look at stadium plans in February as they approach a final decision. Leaving St James’ Park seems likely, and fans should learn of the club’s plans sooner rather than later.

Newcastle United fans react to Man United stadium plans

Newcastle fans reacted to Everton’s new stadium in February and criticised the new venue. Now, they got a glimpse of Manchester United’s new project.

The unique look of the 100,000-seater venue has certainly split opinion, featuring three tall spires and a mesh net covering the stadium.

When Newcastle fans were asked by Mark Douglas what they thought of the stadium, supporters sent a clear message to PIF to avoid a similar look…

One supporter said: “If we build a new stadium and it looks anything like that there’ll be riots. Looks like a circus.”

A second posted: “Would you want a circus tent stadium built by Mike Ashley? No? Didn’t think so.”

Another wrote: “Looks shocking, hope whatever we’ve got designed is nothing like it football stadium should be designed to be exactly that first and foremost, Everton seem to be the only ones that have tried.”

“Circus tent isn’t it? Awful design I would hope ours is miles better than that,” wrote another fan.

PIF expected to confirm stadium plans imminently

Manchester United and Newcastle both started planning their stadium project at similar times, and PIF’s announcement should follow closely behind the Red Devils.

Reports suggest that fans can expect a stadium decision in March after PIF’s visit to England. Discussing the stadium was understood to have been a hot topic for their visit.

Newcastle fans are yet to see any design photos for a new stadium, but supporters have made it blindingly clear that they do not want to see anything like Manchester United’s design.

If everything goes smoothly, “concrete” progress on the stadium could begin in 2025. The completion date will obviously depend on how ambitious PIF’s plans are.
