The Newcastle United manager sparked a reaction after questioning his players following their defeat to Brentford in the Premier League last month. Things feel very different now.
Newcastle are also through the busiest part of the season in terms of the frantic festive fixture schedule.
While the schedule is never exactly easy, the most intense part of the campaign is surely over.
Which is why it’s brilliant news to see recent reports about injured players potentially returning.
Emil Krafth is reportedly set to feature against Bromley in the FA Cup on Sunday after a recent collarbone injury. Howe, meanwhile, is pleased with Callum Wilson’s progress.
Even Nick Pope isn’t believed to be too far away.
Asked about a certain Jamaal Lascelles, however, Howe provided a more measured update.
Jamaal Lascelles injury update emerges for Newcastle United

Speaking to The Chronicle about the club captain coming back from the serious knee injury he suffered last season, Howe confirmed Lascelles was still facing a couple of months out of action.
“He is making good progress and he has been been the absolute model professional in terms of what he is being asked to do and how he is conducting himself,” he said.
“Without putting a definitive timeline on it, he is going to be a couple of months away.”
Jamaal Lascelles has had a huge impact at Newcastle United behind the scenes
Lascelles may have largely lost his starting berth during the 2022-23 season following the signing of Sven Botman but did well when replacing the injured Dutchman last time out.
To have seen him suffer a serious injury at the time Botman suffered one was a huge blow.
Still, Howe has constantly talked up Lascelles and his impact behind the scenes. Even when not playing, it seems he’s making a difference.
Sandro Tonali, after all, talked of how Lascelles helped support him upon his return from a betting ban earlier this season.
It seems Lascelles remains a big part of the picture behind the scenes.
