As if that wasn’t enough, Eddie Howe’s side also have one foot in the Carabao Cup final. On Tuesday, they recorded a statement 2-0 win over Arsenal to ensure they take a significant lead back to St James’ Park next month.

The Newcastle United manager has certainly navigated some difficult waters this season. The club could not strengthen to any significant degree last summer and another quiet transfer window has been predicted for this month.

With that in mind, it’s been all about working with the internal solutions on offer to Howe.

By and large, he’s done that very well and recent days have brought good news on the injury front.

Emil Krafth is reportedly set to feature against Bromley in the FA Cup on Sunday and there’s been a boost in regards to Callum Wilson.

Wilson was hailed as a mentality “monster” by Howe last season but has hardly featured this time around due to various injuries.

Still, it seems Wilson is on course to return in the reasonably imminent future.

Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference, Howe said: “Callum is on the grass today. Not training with the first team. He’s making good progress. We’re very pleased with him.

“Such a difficult situation for him. He didn’t feel right after the game against Brentford and the scan showed a bigger problem than he felt – and it’s meant weeks on the sidelines.”

Newcastle could make a fresh U-turn on Callum Wilson

While Wilson’s ability to score goals in the Premier League cannot be doubted, his fitness record very much can.

Out of contract in the summer, the 32-year-old had been expected to leave upon the expiration of his deal.

Still, recent reports from The Athletic suggest Newcastle could trigger the option to extend Wilson’s contract by another year should he start scoring goals upon his return from injury.
