Influential Leicester City midfielder and Newcastle United target Youri Tielemans has admitted he will ‘see what happens’ in the summer amid his uncertain future, and the Belgian has reiterated his desire to play Champions League football.
The 24-year-old’s contract with the Foxes expires next summer which means the King Power Stadium side may have to cash in on one of their prized assets during the upcoming transfer window, to get the best possible price.
90min have claimed that the former AS Monaco man is not interested in extending his contract with the UEFA Conference League quarter-finalists and has rejected the offer of fresh terms.
Undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, Tielemans isn’t going to be short of suitors and he has spoken about his future during the international break.
Tielemans said: “I don’t worry about [transfer rumours]. I want to get the most out of myself this season and finish as high as possible with the team.
“Of course, I want to play in the Champions League, just like any footballer.
“Am I ready for a European top club? I’m ready to get the best out of my career. We’ll see what happens next summer, or the summer after that.”
Leicester City number eight’s public desire to play Champions League football means that Newcastle are unfortunately going to be way down the pecking order in the pursuit for the talented Belgian.
According to 90min, Newcastle are one of a few teams monitoring Tielemans’ situation.
Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and West Ham United are also all in the hunt for the Belgium international, but half of those sides are likely to be playing Champions League football next season.
Newcastle were actually linked with Tielemans back in October, shortly after the completion of the takeover.
The Daily Mail had reported he would be the kind of calibre of player PIF would look to bring to the club.
Tielemans’ stock has steadily risen since making the move to England from France and his latest comments indicate that Newcastle aren’t going to be a club that he would consider joining right now.
PIFs journey to challenging for Champions League places is likely to be a few more years away and it seems our current trajectory doesn’t marry up with the career path Youri Tielemans wants to embark upon.
