Newcastle United continue to be linked with a host of players following the lucrative takeover, with the latest being Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans.
The Mail report that although player recruitment is at an early stage, the calibre of player the new owners will target would be Leicester’s Belgian star, who is out of contract in the summer of 2023.
Would Tielemans move to Newcastle?
In his fourth season in English football, Tielemans is the type of player who would help transform this Newcastle side and bring added creativity and work rate to the midfield.
At the age of 24, he has his prime years ahead of him.
If Tielemans shows no willingness to sign a new contract at the King Power Stadium, them then Leicester hierarchy could be forced to cash in on their number eight and recoup the £40.5m they paid to Monaco to secure his signature two years ago.
The Foxes currently find themselves 13th in the Premier League, only five points ahead of Newcastle, and sit bottom of their Europa League group.
As they have shown in recent years with N’Golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez, Danny Drinkwater, Harry Maguire and Ben Chilwell, they won’t budge on their asking price for their prized assets.
But Tielemans’ contract situation limits their bargaining power. Newcastle’s rise to the top will be aided if they sign proven Premier League players who share the club’s ambition of getting to the top.
Leicester have agonisingly missed out on Champions League qualification for the last two seasons, but as it stands, it looks highly unlikely that Rodgers’ side are going to again threaten to upset the monopoly of the big four this time around.
What would Tielemans bring?
Tielemans, who has one goal and two assists so far this season, showed in last season’s FA Cup final that he is a player who relishes the big stage.
He’s a quality midfield technician who would completely change the way Newcastle play.
Comfortable on the ball, but equally industrious out of possession, Tielemans has never played in the Champions League, but he may feel joining the Newcastle revolution could be his best chance to compete in Europe’s top club competition.
Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal star Paul Merson said about Tielemans on Sky Sports News [06/05/2019]: “I think he’s special, I really do, I think this kid is a top, top player.”
The rumour mill is forever going to be in overdrive due to Newcastle’s new wealth.
Tielemans, who won the FA Cup with Leicester last season, is a player who isn’t necessarily a household name, but the qualities he would bring would help compliment the bigger potential signings.
