Reported Newcastle United transfer target Jens Cajuste played his first 90 minutes of the season for Midtjylland at the weekend.

The Sweden international was a target for the Magpies a few weeks before the transfer window closed, according to RMC Sport (via GFFN).

The 22-year-old then spoke of his frustration at not managing to seal an exit from the Danish side this summer, after being linked with Steve Bruce’s side.

Reports in France had even claimed that Newcastle had lodged a £13.5 million bid for the player.

But a move didn’t materialise and Newcastle’s entire summer transfer budget went on making Joe Willock a permanent signing in a £25m (Sky Sports) deal with Arsenal.

Cajuste played the full 90 minutes of Midtjylland’s 4-0 win against Aarhus in the Superliga on Sunday.

It was his first full appearance of the season for his club after a brief cameo in a league fixture last month.

He also came off the bench in Midtjylland’s 3-1 Europa League defeat to Braga on Thursday.

The midfielder did however play the full 90 minutes for his nation in a friendly against Uzbekistan during the last international break.

Alongside Newcastle’s Emil Krafth, Cajuste has been called up to Sweden’s squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Kosovo and Greece.

Midtjylland currently sit top of the Superliga and will be eager to wrestle the crown back off Brondby.

Cajuste, who won the Danish league title with the club in 2019/20, seems intent on seeking a new challenge and he has previously expressed his desire to play in the Premier League.

If the Danish giants fail to qualify for the Europa League knockout stages, they could well decide to cash in on Cajuste.

But that will mean that Mike Ashley has to stump up the cash which is a completely different proposition.

But with Jonjo Shelvey injured and Isaac Hayden drifting in and out from playing in a back-three or in midfield, Bruce needs and injection of quality reinforcements in his midfield.

If we are still flirting with relegation come the New Year which looks probable, Ashley may sanction a midfield move for Jens Cajuste to ensure the club’s infamous takeover bid doesn’t suffer any further setbacks with our top-flight status in danger.
