Newcastle United reportedly want to sign Dean Henderson on loan next season.

That’s according to 90min, who claim the Magpies prefer a temporary move for the 25-year-old while Manchester United want rid permanently.

Henderson looks certain to leave Old Trafford, with even a change of manager failing to convince him to stay.

St James’ Park feels like his most likely destination, with talks over a move to Newcastle already taking place. The Manchester Evening News claimed that the 25-year-old is ‘closing in’ on joining Eddie Howe’s squad.

It’s previously been reported that a loan for Henderson is most likely, and that’s seemingly what Newcastle would prefer.

That’s likely down to financial fair play, with spending regulations limiting how much the new Toon owners can spend this summer. Therefore, only loaning him and potentially delaying a permanent fee until next year makes sense.

A loan move also gives us the chance to assess Henderson and see if he actually is up to the job of being Newcastle’s number one.

If the Magpies fail to land Henderson, they do have other options. That includes West Brom stopper Sam Johnstone.

The Baggies’ number one is set to leave the Hawthorns soon, with his contract expiring. That’s led to multiple clubs eyeing a deal for the 29-year-old.

The Sun claim that Newcastle are one of four Premier League sides that want to sign Johnstone.

He was excellent in the top flight last season, and even earned himself three England caps.

However, he doesn’t feel like a massive improvement on what we’ve already got. Is he better than Martin Dubravka? Not for me.

Johnstone would be a decent backup option, but that’s not what we need this summer. If we’re going to sign a goalkeeper, it has to be someone who can compete with and eventually replace Dubravka.

Henderson ticks those boxes, so hopefully a deal gets done.
