Newcastle transfer news: Toon will be offered Gabriel Barbosa

Newcastle United will reportedly be offered the chance to sign Gabriel Barbosa this summer.

That’s according to Give Me Sport’s Dean Jones, who claims the player’s agent is seeking a move to the Premier League for his client.

He adds that Wolves are interested, while West Ham will also be given the chance to sign the Brazilian striker.

Flamengo’s number nine fills a position Newcastle need to improve in, and he’s been linked with the Magpies before.

Gabriel Barbosa has been a Newcastle target in the past

He was first linked with Newcastle back in 2019, when he was shining at the Club World Cup that was eventually won by Liverpool.

That was when he was only on loan at Flamengo, having struggled to have an impact at Inter Milan.

However, playing in South America has been a different story for Barbosa, who is also known as Gabigol.

The 25-year-old has scored more than 100 goals since his move to Flamengo, leading to constant links over a move back to Europe.

He was a January target at the start of the year following the change of ownership, with Eddie Howe looking to add more firepower to his squad. It was even reported that Gabigol wanted to join Newcastle and link up with Joelinton.

The Mirror claimed that Flamengo were willing to loan the striker out, then sell him for £17million in the summer.

However, he stayed in Brazil and Newcastle turned to Chris Wood.

That move hasn’t delivered the goals required, and the Magpies are once again in the market for a striker.

Newcastle to be offered Hugo Ekitike alternative

It looked like Hugo Ekitike was going to be the striker Newcastle get, but that deal appears to be in doubt. 90min have reported that Newcastle have pulled out of the deal, while other outlets state that the Magpies are frustrated by the negotiations.

The Magpies will be looking at alternatives, making this potentially a perfect storm.

Gabigol’s goal record is certainly better than Ekitike’s, who has only had one full season in Ligue 1. He did scored 10 times for Reims, which was impressive from 24 games.

But Barbosa’s numbers are much better. He scored a whopping 43 goals during a loan spell with Flamengo in 2019, and has gone on to be just as successful since the deal became permanent.

However, he’s never done it in Europe. His one season with Inter ended with just a single goal, and he didn’t do any better out on loan with Benfica.

That could be a concern, although Barbosa is clearly a player who has kicked on since his disaster move to Italy.

If he can take his goalscoring talents from Brazil to England then he could be a good signing.
