Paris Saint-Germain v Stade de Reims - Ligue 1 Uber Eats

Newcastle should push for Arnaud Kalimuendo if Hugo Ekitike deal has collapsed

Newcastle United’s bid to sign Hugo Ekitike has reportedly collapsed.

That’s according to 90min, who claim the Magpies have now pulled out of the race to sign the 20-year-old.

It’s hugely disappointing news, as Newcastle officials have committed a lot of time to this deal. Ekitike has been a target throughout 2022, but he isn’t heading to St James’ Park any time soon.

Of course, things could change. But for now, it looks like the deal is off if 90min’s report is accurate.

They add that Paris Saint-Germain are now leading the chase. That would be a huge move for Ekitike, giving him the chance to play with Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar.

However, if he was concerned about first-team minutes at Newcastle, he will be in for a huge shock if he goes to Paris.

Dan Ashworth and co will instead look elsewhere – which brings us to another young forward who has been impressing in France.

Newcastle have been linked with Arnaud Kalimuendo

Another young attacker from Ligue 1 is also a target for Newcastle. Foot Mercato claimed in April that Arnaud Kalimuendo was a target.

The French outlet have recently reaffirmed this line, adding that he has rejected a move to Nottingham Forest.

Kalimuendo is a PSG player, but has spent the past two seasons on loan at Lens. He scored seven Ligue 1 goals in 2020/21, then hit double figures last season.

The 20-year-old scored 12 league goals last time out, which is more than any Newcastle player got during the 2021/22 campaign.

He would be a great alternative as Ekitike deal collapses

It was reported that the youngster wants to stay at PSG, but that might not be possible if they get Ekitike. Sky Sports claim that a PSG move for Ekitike could ‘pave the way for Arnaud Kalimuendo to leave the club‘.

As one door closes, another could be opening for Newcastle. The move for Ekitike has been hugely frustrating, but Kalimuendo could be equally as exciting.

He can play through the middle and out wide, like Ekitike, and has proven he has an eye for goal across the channel.

When rumours of interest in Kalimuendo first emerged, we batted them off. It made no sense to be chasing him and Ekitike.

But if a deal for the Reims youngster is off then Newcastle are in a position to go all in on Kalimuendo.

He has age on his side like Ekitike, he’s versatile like Ekitike, and he can score goals like Ekitike. But will the Magpies now make a move?
