Newcastle United reportedly want to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid this summer.
That’s according to Spanish outlet AS, who claim the Magpies want the 26-year-old to be the ‘cornerstone of their new project’ a St James’ Park.
As relayed by Sport Witness, AS claim that Newcastle are the club that is pushing the most to sign Asensio.
He’s just enjoyed his best goalscoring season to date for Madrid, netting 10 La Liga goals whilst also becoming a three-time Champions League winner.
However, his Real Madrid future is in doubt this summer. His contract at the Bernabeu expires next summer, meaning he could become a free agent in 2024.
Cashing in this summer would make sense for Los Blancos if they have no plans to keep the winger long term.
However, talk of a move to Newcastle feels somewhat farfetched.
Real Madrid reportedly want Asensio to sign for a Premier League club
TMW reported earlier in the week that Real Madrid want to sell Asensio to a club in England. That’s because of the spending power in the Premier League, with Newcastle, Arsenal and Liverpool mentioned as possible destinations.
They add that Madrid want between £21million and £25.5million for the Palma-born attacker.
That fee would make him attainable for Newcastle – he’s a lot cheaper than Moussa Diaby, who is the club’s top attacking target.
However, he simply isn’t a realistic target for Eddie Howe. He’s not the type of player we’ve been signing, with sensible additions made since the change of ownership.
While AS claim that Newcastle want Asensio, it feels more like Real Madrid hoping the Magpies move for their player. Clubs want to benefit from our newfound wealth by selling off their deadwood.
We saw it in January with talk of Barcelona wanting Ousmane Dembele to join Newcastle, and this feels very similar.
No way Asensio is heading to Newcastle
There’s simply no chance Newcastle will sign Asensio this summer. We do need a right winger, but it isn’t going to be someone as high profile as him.
The Spain international has a huge reputation and will command a big wage. He would be a marquee arrival and really could be the poster boy of the new era at St James’ Park.
However, he is not the type of player we are targeting. We are not trying to sign blockbuster names.
While he is a good player, Asensio is not a good fit for Newcastle right now. Don’t expect to see him at St James’ Park any time soon.
