Newcastle United’s left-back woes are over after completing a permanent deal for Matt Targett.
The 26-year-old was exceptional during a loan spell from Aston Villa, so much so that a lot of Toon fans wanted to see him back for good.
And after some deliberation and links with other players such as Renan Lodi, supporters have got their wish. Patience was required, but thankfully he’s back.
It’s a wonderful start to the window for the Magpies. It isn’t particularly exciting or glamorous, but it reeks of common sense. And those views are echoed by ex-Toon defender Jose Enrique.
Enrique has his say on Newcastle signing Targett
Following confirmation of the deal, Enrique reacted to the news on Twitter.
He wrote: “Great deal from Newcastle very happy for you. His loan spell was very successful so it makes perfect sense to buy him. Exciting times I believe for Newcastle fans. You deserve it.”
Enrique sums up why fans are so happy to see Targett back.
He was a rather understated signing in January – there wasn’t too much buzz when he arrived. But he quickly proved to be the answer to our left-back problems.
Targett played every minute possible, which proves how valuable he was to Eddie Howe.
Signing him permanently makes ‘perfect sense’ as Enrique says. He knows how to be a success in Howe’s system, he’s proven he can thrive in front of the St James’ Park crowd and he didn’t cost a fortune.
All in all, a brilliant deal.
Bruno is delighted to see Targett back
One Toon player who is delighted to see Targett return is Bruno Guimaraes.
The Brazilian previously told NUFC TV that he ‘needs to stay‘, and that is exactly what’s happening. Funnily enough, Newcastle actually used the clip of Bruno speaking about Targett’s future to effectively announce the deal.
Bruno has since reacted to the news of Targett’s return, posting a three-word message on Twitter.
He wrote ‘what a signing’, to which Targett replied ‘agent Bruno’.
It’s a testament to Targett’s ability that Bruno thinks he’s brilliant. This is a Brazil international who has quickly established himself as Newcastle’s best player.
But the 24-year-old appreciates the value of Newcastle’s £15million man, and now they will continue to be teammates.
