Newcastle transfer news: Toon want to sign Nick Pope from Burnley

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Nick Pope.

That’s according to Sky Sports, who claim the Magpies want to bring the Burnley stopper to St James’ Park.

The 30-year-old had a disappointing end to the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, as his side suffered relegation to the Championship. Interestingly, it was a defeat at the hands of Newcastle that condemned them to the drop.

Callum Wilson scored twice against Pope that afternoon, and now the pair could soon become teammates.

Upcoming World Cup will influence Pope’s decision

Sky add that Pope wants to remain a Premier League player, meaning he is likely to leave Turf Moor before the transfer window closes.

With the World Cup on the horizon, he’s keen to stay in the top flight and boost his chances of making Gareth Southgate’s squad. Pope currently has eight England caps, having made his debut in 2018.

The England manager is certainly a big fan of Pope, describing him as ‘incredible’.

“Nick has been, first and foremost, a fantastic part of why the squad has progressed and had a reasonable amount of success comparative to what England have done over the years,” Southgate said in November 2020

“He’s been an incredible member of the squad – high performance level, low maintenance in terms of neediness and sacrifices himself for the team at all moments. You couldn’t ask for a better person to have in the group.”

Relegation could force Pope to leave Burnley

He’s one of multiple relegated players to be linked with a move to Newcastle. James Tarkowski was a target, while there is still speculation surrounding Watford’s Ismaila Sarr.

This is the first time Pope has been named as a target, although we did include him in our list of seven relegated players Eddie Howe could target.

Newcastle are in the market for a goalkeeper this summer, as Howe looks to provide more competition for Martin Dubravka. And Pope would certainly do that.

The Daily Mail have added to the ‘Pope to Newcastle’ speculation. They write that a move to St James’ Park ‘appeals’ to the stopper.

That’s promising news, and he’s reportedly a player the club think can improve in the North East.

There has been criticism of Pope’s distribution, which is a big part of being a modern goalkeeper. However, the Daily Mail state that Newcastle believe he can improve in that area. That surely is the case – he’s merely been stuck in a Burnley environment where he hasn’t been encouraged to play out from the back.

Pope is a fantastic goalkeeper, and probably the best, and most realistic, one we’ve been linked with this summer.
