Sven Botman is officially a Newcastle United player, and today he is meeting his teammates for the first time.

The Dutchman’s move from Lille was confirmed last week, with Botman signing a five-year deal at St James’ Park.

It ended a lengthy transfer saga, with Eddie Howe finally landing the centre-back he’s wanted since January.

But while Botman signed for the club on the same day that pre-season training began, he’s yet to link up with his new teammates – until today.

The club have released a picture of their latest signing on their official Twitter account. The caption reads: “Reporting for duty.”

His arrival signifies the return of the international players, who were given extended breaks after representing their countries.

Botman had been playing for the Netherlands Under-21s side before heading on holiday, then interrupted his time away to sign his Toon contract.

The club have also released a video of Bruno Guimaraes returning to training. The Brazilian midfielder said ‘I missed you’ before entering the building.

Newcastle’s other internationals will also be back today, including new signing Nick Pope who has been away with England alongside Kieran Trippier.

Eddie Howe now has a full squad available to him ahead of the Magpies’ first pre-season friendly. His side take on Gateshead on Saturday in a behind closed doors encounter.

While the likes of Botman and Bruno will train before that game, it would be a surprise to see them in action so soon after returning.

For now, Newcastle’s new boys will focus on becoming acquainted with their new teammates.

Pope will obviously know a lot of the players, having come up against them as a Burnley player. He’ll also know Chris Wood from their time together at Turf Moor.

But it’s a completely new experience for Botman, who has never played in England before or shared a dressing room with any of the current Newcastle players.

Today is the start of an important summer for the 22-year-old, as he looks to settle into life as a Premier League player as quickly as possible.
