Newcastle United are reportedly showing interest in FC Midtjylland midfielder Jens Cajuste.
RMC Sport have reported that Rennes’ pursuit of the player has reached an impasse.
Newcastle, and also Brentford, have therefore entered the race.
Cajuste, 21, is a five-cap Sweden international, who has been with his current club since 2018.
The defensive midfield star has racked up 69 appearances to date, and has a contract until 2023.
Rennes opening offer of around £9.4 million for Cajuste is not enough, and GFFN say the club will need to make some player sales if they are to make a higher bid.
Until that happens though, there is potential for other teams to steal in.
According to RMC, Midtjylland would sell for around £12 million.
News of Newcastle’s interest comes after Isaac Hayden was linked with both Watford and Southampton.
Hayden replacement?
It’s probably unlikely Newcastle would move for a defensive midfielder this summer.
Really, the Magpies need to be adding someone who can make things happen offensively. Joe Willock, for example.
Perhaps Cajuste – described by the Daily Record as Midtjylland’s ‘young jewel in the crown’ and ‘destined for bigger things’ – could be brought in if Hayden did depart.
