Newcastle United have reportedly increased their offer to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon.

The Brazilian midfielder is being heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park. There appeared to be a breakthrough on Wednesday, with multiple outlets claiming an agreement had been reached.

Lyon denied these claims, much like they’ve done with previous deals in the past.

The 24-year-old is currently on international duty, but is scheduled for a Toon medical after Brazil face Ecuador tonight.

Now Newcastle have put more money on the table, and L’Equipe report they are ‘very close’ to an agreement with the Ligue 1 side.

Newcastle bid £35million for Bruno Guimaraes

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Newcastle’s offer is now worth £35million. It also includes £8million worth of bonuses.

That would take the deal beyond £40million, which is the amount the Magpies paid for club record signing Joelinton.

It appears that an agreement with Lyon is all that separates Newcastle and Guimaraes. It has previously been reported that he is keen on a move to St James’ Park.

That is a real surprise considering our current situation compared to how talented he is. Guimaraes could be a real game-changer for the Magpies, who have been crying out for a midfielder like him.

He’s strong offensively and defensively, while he still has time to improve given his age.

If Newcastle can pull this off, it will be a sensational piece of business. It would also be the most expensive signing of the PIF era, but it would surely be money well spent.

Ever since the takeover, there’s been talk of Newcastle making a huge statement in January. Guimaraes would be exactly that.
