Newcastle United are reportedly one of multiple clubs in contact with Juventus superstar Paulo Dybala.

The Argentine forward’s contract at Juve expires this summer, meaning he will be available on a free. Plenty of clubs are keeping an eye on him, as it’s rare a player so talented becomes available for nothing.

But that’s the situation with Dybala, who is reportedly expected to leave Turin this summer.

That’s according to ESPN, who claim Newcastle are one of four Premier League clubs who’ve made contact with the 28-year-old’s representatives. The other clubs are Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Seeing Newcastle linked with a player of Dybala’s calibre is staggering. It will also feel unrealistic for a lot of fans, who don’t expect Newcastle to sign such big names ahead of next season.

It’s hard to know what to expect from the Magpies, but Dybala’s contract situation will certainly appeal to the new owners at St James’ Park.

Paulo Dybala could be ‘marquee’ Newcastle signing

ESPN add that Newcastle’s owners want a marquee signing following last year’s Saudi-backed takeover. They certainly made a splash in January, bringing in Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes.

Dybala would be on another level entirely. And they wouldn’t even have to pay a transfer fee. That’s why this rumour is a bit more intriguing compared to other links with elite superstars.

But where would he fit in at St James’ Park? Dybala predominantly plays as a second striker, or directly through the middle.

Newcastle currently use a 4-3-3 formation, so that wouldn’t really suit the Argentina international. But Eddie Howe may change things – he was a 4-4-2 man at Bournemouth.

Dybala coming to St James’ Park would be a real gamechanger. It’s the kind of signing that would capture the world’s attention.

But is it likely? He’ll command mega wages, with ESPN reporting he was previously offered £160,000-a-week to stay at Juventus. He’s also got various other clubs chasing him who will be able to offer European football.

Dybala swapping the black and white of Juventus for Newcastle feels farfetched, but you never know
