The transfer window has now closed, and attention is back on winning games of football and staying in the Premier League for Newcastle United.

It has a been a frenetic past few weeks for the club and its new owners.

In the end, five new faces have walked through the door at St. James’ Park, and the hope is that they can all hit the ground running quickly and make a solid impact.

Three of the new signings are defenders.

Newcastle have leaked goals left, right and centre this season. And so, it was vitally important to strengthen at the back.

Another centre-back in addition to Dan Burn would have been nice. But a decent job has been done.

Newcastle also brought in Chris Wood from Burnley for £25 million (BBC Sport). The Magpies currently have Callum Wilson sidelined, with the striker hopefully returning to action later this month.

One wonders what may happen in terms of team selection once he is back fit.

A lot of Newcastle fans have been doing their best XIs on social media, with Wilson in as the lone striker ahead of Wood.

But perhaps Eddie Howe could use both of them in a partnership once the Englishman is back available, rather than bench Wood.

Callum Wilson and Chris Wood strike partnership could prove fruitful for Eddie Howe and Newcastle

It is something that actually seems highly likely.

Wood is used to playing in a two-man attack. He would often start up top for Burnley alongside Matej Vydra or Jay Rodriguez. And playing with a partner has clearly served him well over the past few seasons.

£20 million star Wilson (Sky Sports) has a lot of experience playing in a two. Of course, he made many appearances under Howe at Bournemouth, with the manager deploying him with Josh King.

And Wilson has at times played with Allan Saint-Maximin shoe-horned alongside him at Newcastle.

Playing with both Wood and Wilson would mean dropping a central midfielder though. Presuming Howe wants to stick with four-at-the-back.

It will be very interesting to see if that is something he is tempted to do in a bid to score more goals.
