Newcastle United are reportedly hoping to sign Christian Eriksen on a free transfer this summer.

The 30-year-old’s contract at Brentford expires at the end of the season, having only signed a short-term deal with the Bees.

Eriksen has been excellent since his emotional return to football. It looked like his career was over after he collapsed during a Euro 2020 game last year.

But he made his comeback at the start of the year, and has proven he can still be a star in one of Europe’s elite leagues.

His form could be bad news for Brentford though, with plenty of clubs reportedly eyeing the midfielder on a free.

90min recently named a plethora of Premier League sides who could offer him a deal, including Newcastle. And the Northern Echo have reported that the Magpies are ‘hopeful’ they can sign the former Tottenham star.

If Eriksen does move to St James’ Park, one former Toon player will be very happy.

Following the reports, ex-Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique has given his opinion on Eriksen possibly joining the club.

He wrote on Twitter: “If this happens it will be a great signing. What a player and on a free.”

He also posted a crossed fingers emoji, signalling his hope that Newcastle complete a deal for the Denmark international.

A lot of fans will probably agree with Enrique. It’s exciting to see Newcastle linked with Eriksen, who would be a wonderful signing for Eddie Howe.

He would add experience of playing at the top level, just like Kieran Trippier has done since his January arrival. Eriksen would also bring immense quality to a midfield that has often lacked craft and invention this season.

To top it all off, he is available on a free. That would allow the Toon owners to spend their transfer budget elsewhere.

Enrique is right – Eriksen would be a ‘great signing’ for Newcastle United this summer. Over to you Amanda Staveley…
