Another Steve Nickson dream could come true if Newcastle United sign Alexander Isak this summer.
The Magpies are continuing to search for a striker, having been rebuffed in their bid to land Hugo Ekitike.
A move for Chelsea’s Armando Broja is rumoured, but Eddie Howe’s side face competition from multiple Premier League clubs.
Newcastle are therefore looking at other targets, and one player that is reportedly being discussed is Isak.
Newcastle chief Steve Nickson tracking Alexander Isak
The Swedish forward was first mentioned as a possible target back in March, back when Toon officials were making plans for a summer of evolution at St James’ Park.
Fast forward to July and Isak is still being discussed on Tyneside. According to the Athletic, his name is constantly mentioned during transfer meetings.
They add that the 22-year-old has been a Newcastle target for a while, with Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson tracking him for years.
The Swedish forward is currently playing for Real Sociedad, where he scored six La Liga goals last season. He was more prolific the season prior, finding the net 17 times.
Isak is a really talented player, and one who has been tipped for the top for a long time. That’s why Borussia Dortmund snapped him up at the age of 17, having also turned down a move to Real Madrid.
While he’s yet to totally hit the heights expected of him, the potential is there for all to see. His former teammate Chinedu Obasi even went as far to brand him the ‘new Zlatan Ibrahimovic‘.
Isak has also been praised by Tottenham attacker and fellow countryman Dejan Kulusevski, who believes he is ‘good at everything‘. High praise from the Spurs star.
Toon may struggle to sign Isak
While Isak is massively admired at St James’ Park, a summer transfer could prove to be difficult.
The Athletic add that his price tag is proving to be too much. That’s an issue Newcastle have faced multiple times this summer, and it could stop Isak heading to Tyneside.
The Magpies are trying to be careful with their spending this summer, and still have two big positions to fill. Howe wants a striker and a right winger, with Moussa Diaby also being linked with a club record move.
Newcastle aren’t really in a position where they can splash out on two big names. Therefore, a move for the super Swede is possibly out of reach.
