Newcastle United are set to sign Sven Botman from Lille, in a deal that will delight everyone on Tyneside.
The Toon Army have been waiting a long time for Botman to join the club, with the defender first being linked ahead of the January window.
Newcastle couldn’t do a deal then, but the Dutch defender is finally set to become a Magpie ahead of the 2022/23 season.
The 22-year-old is an exciting addition at St James’ Park, and fans will be keen to see him in action as soon as possible.
And Newcastle’s recruitment team will also be excited to see him play given how everyone feels about signing him.
Newcastle decision makers unanimous about signing Sven Botman
Ahead of the deal being announced, the Athletic’s Chris Waugh spoke about Botman on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne.
Waugh explained what makes Botman rare as the club prepare to announce the deal.
“He is a rarity in that every single person on Newcastle’s recruitment team, so Amanda Staveley, Jamie Reuben, Jason Tindall, Howe himself, Steve Nickson the head of recruitment, and even Dan Ashworth once he came in,” he said.
“All of them were unanimous in believing that Newcastle should go for him. It’s rare that you get that all the way through.”
Recruitment team’s stance speaks volumes about Botman
It says a lot about the defender’s ability and potential that everyone agreed we should try to sign him. Even Dan Ashworth was on board after recently joining as Sporting Director.
Newcastle’s recruitment team have all been pulling in the same direction, and they will be immensely proud when this transfer is completed.
While negotiations were long and drawn out, the real hard work will begin once the deal is confirmed.
Then it will almost be time for Botman to meet his teammates and kick off pre-season ahead of the new campaign.
Everyone has high hopes for him, which may put him under a little bit of pressure to succeed. But that shouldn’t be a problem, and he looks readymade to be a star at St James’ Park.
He’s a player Steve Nickson had previously scouted, and his work under the old regime is paying off. The new owners have provided the funds required, and are spending big money on the towering defender.
As for Howe, he’s been desperate to add Botman to his squad, and that is finally set to happen.
