Newcastle United target Timo Werner could reportedly be allowed to leave Chelsea this summer.

The Magpies have been linked with the German forward, as Eddie Howe searches far and wide for attacking reinforcements.

We’ve suffered setback after setback in the pursuit of a striker, and could now turn to Werner. The 26-year-old has had two years to forget at Stamford Bridge after his £47.5million move from RB Leipzig, and could now be moved on.

However, one thing needs to happen before Chelsea will consider any offers for him.

Werner can leave Chelsea if they find a replacement

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea will potentially let Werner leave the club this summer – but only if they find a replacement.

Letting the forward leave right now would be considered a risk, especially since they’ve already got rid of Romelu Lukaku.

The only attacking signing they’ve made so far is Raheem Sterling, and Thomas Tuchel wants one more before letting Werner go.

That stance makes sense, but it means Newcastle will be forced to wait.

Werner could be a good addition on loan for Newcastle

If Newcastle do decide to make a move for Werner, it will surely be on loan. He would surely command too high a fee for the Toon owners to consider a permanent deal.

And even a temporary switch could be difficult. The Telegraph state that Howe’s side are keeping an eye on Werner, but would need Chelsea to pay most of his wages. Whether the Blues agree to that depends on how desperate they are to move him on.

While he has struggled since moving to the Premier League, Werner could be an astute addition for the Magpies. He would arrive with a point to prove, and the need to earn a place in Germany’s World Cup squad.

He’s versatile too, capable of playing through the middle or off one of the flanks. That must appeal to Howe, who is looking to add a striker and a winger to his squad. Signing Werner would kill two birds with one stone.

His form in England is concerning, but we saw at Leipzig that he can be a force in the right system. Howe is the type of manager who could get the best out of him, and his speed should suit our new pressing style perfectly.

It would still be a surprise to see Werner in a Newcastle shirt, as multiple things need to happen before a deal occurs. However, he could be a good addition on loan if everything falls into place.
