Newcastle United have signed Sven Botman – kind of.
After the player arrived on Tyneside for a medical and to finalise personal terms, fans were eagerly awaiting an official announcement.
Monday night was reserved for the arrival of new sleeve sponsor Noon, who have replaced Kayak. Then Monday morning was all about the club’s new third kit and season tickets going on sale.
It all appeared to be leading to a big Botman announcement on Tuesday night, but that’s not what happened.

Confirmation of a deal for the 22-year-old was rather subdued. The club confirmed a deal in principle had been agreed with Lille. They added that he has passed his medical and agreed a five-year contract.
There were no comments from Eddie Howe or Dan Ashworth, and fans were told that the formalities of the transfer would be finalised later in the week.
Botman sent a message to fans on Instagram, while Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben reacted to the move. The Dutchman also received social media messages from Kieran Trippier and Allan Saint-Maximin.
Sven Botman signing for Newcastle delayed by Lille until tomorrow

The centre-back’s move from Lille to Newcastle is basically done – all we’re waiting for is official confirmation from the two clubs.
And according to the Shields Gazette, that is likely to happen tomorrow on July 1st.
It is reported that the reason the move has been delayed is Lille wanted to hold off until the start of next month. That means they can include the money in next year’s financial accounts rather than this year’s.
This is something clubs often do to help juggle financial fair play. However, the Shields Gazette add that it won’t hurt or hinder Newcastle due to the way they have agreed to pay for the transfer.

Luckily, there is nothing to worry about. Botman will be a Newcastle United player.
It’s been an agonising transfer saga, with issues over the fee and competition from AC Milan. But the Magpies are coming out on top and getting their man.
We’ve had the buzz of a £35million bid being accepted last Friday, then a fresh buzz when he arrived in the North East on Monday. Tuesday brought excitement over the deal being announced in principle, and now we await the official unveiling. Hopefully that happens tomorrow.
