Newcastle transfer news: Romano claims Magpies favour youth over Aubameyang

Newcastle United are expected to prioritise targeting young strikers in the January transfer window amid reports they could make a move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

That’s the view of football journalist Fabrizio Romano who was speaking on the latest Vibe with Five podcast.

Sky Sports have reported that Arsenal will consider suitable offers for their former captain with a January transfer not being ruled out. Since being stripped of the captaincy, Aubameyang has been absent from Mikel Arteta’s last five matchday squads.

The Mirror have boldly claimed that the Magpies could make a loan move for the 71-cap Gabon international with a £20million option to buy.

But Romano doesn’t believe that the Saudi-led consortium will prioritise targeting Aubameyang, who was signed by the Gunners for £56million (BBC Sport).

Speaking on the podcast, Romano said: “Newcastle have different priorities which include young strikers. They want to go for experienced players like Kieran Trippier, but they also want young talents.

“For Newcastle, Aubameyang is not a priority, maybe later in the window, but as of now, he’s not a priority.”

Newcastle should steer clear of Aubameyang

Although Eddie Howe’s need for a striker has intensified following the injury to Callum Wilson, the last thing this team needs is someone coming into the dressing room and upsetting the apple cart.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has previously spoken abut the 32-year-old’s discipline discrepancies.

There is no denying Arsenal’s number 14 has the ability to fire Newcastle to safety, but it would be one almighty risk by PIF and Howe.

Aubameyang is unlikely to really have any real interest in Newcastle surviving or not, as long as he is given an increase on his current £250,000-a-week wage (Spotrac).

Arsenal’s willingness to part ways with their star man should be a stark enough warning for Newcastle to steer clear.

Howe will want a dressing room who are all fighting for the same cause and whilst signing Aubameyang could prove to be a masterstroke, it also has the capabilities to bring major ramifications.

But Romano’s comments indicate that PIF and Howe won’t be drawn in by the lure of bringing Aubameyang to Tyneside.
