Newcastle transfer news: PSG unwilling to match Toon’s Hugo Ekitike offer

Where Newcastle United failed, PSG are trying to succeed with Hugo Ekitike.

The French forward’s move to St James’ Park was called off last month, despite a fee of £26million being agreed with Reims.

Personal terms proved to be the issue, with Newcastle unable to agree a fee with Ekitike’s agent. That forced the Magpies to walk away and look elsewhere, with Armando Broja now heavily linked.

Ekitike’s manager at Reims Oscar Garcia commented on his future, stating that he would be staying with the Ligue 1 side.

However, he added that could change if Barcelona or Real Madrid made an approach. That hasn’t happened, but PSG are a club of similar stature.

Hugo Ekitike agrees terms with PSG, but no offer accepted

Newcastle couldn’t agree terms with Ekitike, but PSG look like they can. According to Le Parisien and the Northern Echo, the 20-year-old has agreed a deal in principle with the Ligue 1 champions.

That’s a big hurdle that Newcastle simply couldn’t overcome, but it doesn’t mean this transfer saga is going to be straightforward either.

While Ekitike has agreed to join PSG, they are yet to agree a fee with Reims.

The Northern Echo state that PSG are unwilling to pay what Newcastle were going to for the forward. This means that Reims will either have to lower their demands or refuse to sell him.

Finances weren’t a problem for Newcastle – it was the player. Now finances shouldn’t be a problem for PSG either, but they are probably relying on their reputation to force a move through.

It’s no surprise Ekitike wants to join PSG. Who wouldn’t want to play alongside Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar?

But it might not be the best career choice. Ekitike is a ‘special‘ player with huge potential, but he might not be able to reach that at PSG.

Either way, he’s not our problem anymore, with Newcastle looking elsewhere.
