Some of the Newcastle United owners want to sign Matt Targett permanently this summer.
That’s according to the Chronicle, who claim Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi are keen to keep the 26-year-old at St James’ Park
Targett was one of five players the new owners brought in during the January transfer window. He arrived on loan from Aston Villa in the aftermath of the Lucas Digne fiasco. The Frenchman snubbed Newcastle, but we had the last laugh.
The former Southampton left-back hit the ground running in black and white, and has pretty much been an ever present for Eddie Howe since arriving. He’s only missed one game, and that was against his parent club Villa where he was ineligible.
As it stands, Targett has played his last game for Newcastle at St James’ Park. However, hopefully this isn’t the end.
Newcastle owners want to sign Targett, but decision lies with Eddie Howe
The Chronicle claim Staveley and Ghodoussi want Targett to come back, and it sounds like the player does too.
In an interview with NUFC TV after Monday’s victory, Targett said: “I think everyone knows what I want, but it’s up to the club.”
Don’t be too subtle Matt…
Bruno Guimaraes definitely wants him to stay, hijacking his interview to tell the camera ‘he needs to stay’.
The owners want it, the player wants it, and so does one of his teammates. But does Eddie Howe?
It was previously reported that the manager is undecided on signing Targett permanently. That’s not to say he isn’t keen – just that a decision simply hasn’t been made.
But hopefully his mind will be made up soon and Targett agrees a permanent move to Newcastle. A transfer can be completed for £15million, which is a bit of a bargain given football’s current financial climate.
Big names such as Renan Lodi have been linked with a move to St James’ Park, but Targett is the left-back we need right now. He’s proven himself to be dependable, and has played a key role in keeping Newcastle in the Premier League.
Matt Targett, we want you to stay!
