Bruno Guimaraes has sent the Newcastle United owners a clear message over the future of Matt Targett.

There were incredible scenes on the pitch after last night’s game, as the players soaked up the applause from a grateful and buoyant Toon Army.

Multiple Newcastle players were interviewed on the St James’ Park turf after the game during the lap of honour, including Matt Targett.

The left-back put in another great performance, faced with Arsenal’s most dangerous player Bukayo Saka. The England star had a couple of openings, but Targett once again did well.

However, it could quite well be his final home appearance as a Toon player. His loan is coming to an end, and there are no guarantees that Eddie Howe will sign him permanently.

Bruno hijacks Targett interview

After the game, Targett spoke to NUFC TV about the game, but his interview was hijacked.

“One minute – he needs to stay,” Bruno said.

The message is clear from the Bruno – bring Targett back next season. And it’s a sentiment I’m sure a lot of fans will agree with.

Targett was then asked about his future, and was hardly subtle about his desire to stay at St James’ Park.

“I think everyone knows what I want, but it’s up to the club,” he said while laughing.

“It’s a massive project, an exciting project and I’m sure everyone wants to be a part of it.”

£15m Targett deal is a must

It was reported earlier in the year by the Chronicle that Newcastle can sign Targett permanently for £15million. For that kind of money, it feels like a no brainer.

The 26-year-old has proven to be an excellent signing from Aston Villa, and will no doubt go down as a bit of an unsung hero in years to come.

Targett hasn’t been anything flash – he’s simply worked hard and got on with his job. He’s a defender who can defend first and foremost, and he’s proven he can dovetail well with the enigmatic Allan Saint-Maximin.

Newcastle need to sign a left-back this summer. Bruno hopes it’s Targett, and so will a lot of fans. Fingers crossed Howe agrees.
