Newcastle United are set to bid £21 million for Renan Lodi of Atletico Madrid (Tuttomercato). The Brazilian plays left-back for the Spanish side and made an impact in the Champions League this season.

Lodi netted the winning goal at Old Trafford as Atletico won 1-0 away from home. His goal meant that they won 2-1 on aggregate, progressing them to the quarter-finals.

The same report states that Juventus are also interested in the 24-year-old. However, Newcastle are currently winning the race to sign him.

Matt Targett should still be a priority, but landing Lodi would be a great alternative

Since his arrival on loan from Aston Villa, Matt Targett has been immense. He’s been one of the Toon’s most consistent players this season.

His Premier League experience has served Newcastle United well. They need to bring him in this summer. The club currently haven’t agreed on personal terms with Targett. But there’s still a way to go, so he could definitely still sign for them.

But there will be a number of Newcastle transfer targets lined up just in case he doesn’t sign. Renan Lodi could well be one of them. With his credentials at such a young age, it’s easy to see why.

Lodi is already playing at the top level. However, what might make it difficult is Newcastle’s lack of European football next season.

Furthermore, this could be a hurdle for a number of Newcastle transfer targets. They’re keeping tabs on a number of big names including Marcus Rashford.

However, we can’t rule anyone out. The likes of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes joined in January when the Toon were in a relegation battle.

As for Lodi, Newcastle should keep an eye on him. Especially if they don’t land Targett. There’s no doubt he’ll add quality and has the potential to grow at such a young age.
