Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Middlesbrough midfielder Marcus Tavernier in the January transfer window.
With the January window now open, the Magpies’ Saudi-led consortium will be looking to engineer moves for quality signings which give Eddie Howe’s relegation-threatened side a better chance of survival.
With just under two weeks before our next Premier League fixture against relegation rivals Watford, the Toon Army could have some new additions in our side ahead of next league fixture at St James’ Park.
Amongst a raft of names, the Mail claim that PIF are interested in bringing Championship midfielder Tavernier to Tyneside.

Capable of playing across the midfield, Tavernier has started 22 Championship games so far this season for a Boro side that have started well under new manager Chris Wilder. He has one goal and one assist from those starts.
Only Andraz Sporar (2.3) currently averages more shots per game than Tavernier (2.2) in the Championship for Boro.
Tavernier is out on his own in Wilder’s side when it comes to the average number of key passes (1.4) and dribbles (1.4) per game.

The all-action midfielder also averages 2.1 tackles per game.
With Isaac Hayden ruled out for a couple of months following knee surgery, Howe was likely to have wanted midfield reinforcements before the former Arsenal man’s injury, but Hayden’s lengthy absence will only likely enhance the former Bournemouth man’s desire for midfield signings.
Similar to Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien who has been linked with a move to Newcastle, Howe may look at another Championship player in Tavernier to improve our options in the engine room.
