Newcastle United are leading the race to sign Callum Hudson-Odoi on loan this summer.

That’s according to the Sun, who state that the Magpies are the ‘strong favourites’ to temporarily sign the Chelsea winger.

The 21-year-old was meant to play for the Blues’ Under-21s side on Monday night, having not featured for the senior side against Tottenham on Sunday.

Hudson-Odoi was in line to appear against Fulham, but that didn’t happen. Senior players Ben Chilwell and Trevoh Chalobah were in action, but Hudson-Odoi was nowhere to be seen.

It was claimed earlier on Monday that interest in the youngster had intensified, which is why he wasn’t going to play.

Newcastle hopefully closing in

The Chronicle have also stated that Hudson-Odoi is interested in a move to St James’ Park. That means one major obstacle is out of the way. There was always a chance that he wouldn’t want to swap the bright lights of London for the North East of England.

However, that doesn’t appear to be the case. He is apparently open to joining the Magpies, which is a huge boost in our bid to sign.

As it stands, all signs appear to point towards Hudson-Odoi joining Newcastle. He looks likely to leave on loan, while Amanda Staveley was at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and is friends with new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly.

Now the Sun believe that we are closing in on a deal. How close it is remains to be seen. This is the Sun’s report after all.

But Hudson-Odoi would be an exciting addition. He’s proven to be a player with huge potential but just hasn’t hit the heights expected of him so far. In the words of Joe Cole, ‘he’s a great player and he can get even better’.

While it would just be a loan deal, wages will still be an issue. He reportedly earns £120,000-a-week at Chelsea, and Newcastle will not want to pay that figure in its entirety.

If we are the favourites to sign him then hopefully we can get this deal finalised soon.
