Newcastle United are hoping to complete a deal to sign Atletico Madrid wing-back Kieran Trippier next week, according to the Telegraph.
The club’s Saudi-led consortium are hoping to wrap up the signing of the England international as an ‘early statement of intent’.
However, following the calf injury Callum Wilson sustained in Monday night’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United, the Magpies have reportedly had to ‘alter their transfer plans’ to include the signing of a new striker.
It is claimed that defensive reinforcements remain the priority but with the club’s star striker facing a spell on the side-lines, the signing of a striker has allegedly become a ‘pressing need’ for Eddie Howe.

Although Newcastle United are exploring other transfer options, a move for Kieran Trippier is thought to be the ‘most advanced’.
Newcastle are still assessing the results of a scan on Wilson’s calf injury but the early diagnosis is not believed to be a good one, with the 29-year-old likely to be out for several weeks and all of the club’s games in January.
That’s a hammer blow to our relegation survival prospects with a crucial set of fixtures against sides near the bottom of the table fast approaching.
But the good news is that there is a ‘chance’ that Kieran Trippier could be confirmed as a Newcastle player as early as next week. Following yesterday’s announcement that the Everton game has been postponed, Newcastle are scheduled to face Southampton on Sunday, but that might not go ahead either, due to the injury issues and Covid-19 cases the first team are facing.

If the clash against the Saints is called off as well, Newcastle aren’t currently scheduled to play in the Premier League again until mid-January, due to the FA Cup third round clash against Cambridge taking place a week on Saturday.
That will give us more time to make some January signings.
Atletico Madrid next play on 2 January, so it will be interesting to see whether the former Tottenham Hotspur man forms part of the matchday squad for that clash, if a deal hasn’t already been agreed.
The 31-year-old played for Howe at Burnley and is understood to be very keen at moving back to England and joining PIFs ambitious Newcastle project, despite the club flirting with relegation.
