Newcastle United had agreed a deal with Lille for Sven Botman, but now the French side have changed the asking price.
It was reported last week that the Magpies had a £30million bid accepted for the Dutch defender. It was a huge step in our pursuit of one of Eddie Howe’s top targets. Botman is the defender he wants, having decided against a fresh move for Diego Carlos.
However, Lille have moved the goal posts once again, leaving the Magpies ‘extremely annoyed’.
What Lille’s new Sven Botman asking price is
According to the Telegraph, Lille now want £36million for Botman. This comes less than a week after accepting £6million less.
This is turning into quite the saga. Newcastle have been chasing the 22-year-old for six months now.
For a long time it looked like he would join the club in January, only for Lille to price him out of a move. They eventually set their asking price in January at £46million.
Newcastle were unwilling to pay that and brought in Dan Burn instead.
Now we might be forced to look alternatives once again, as Lille’s change of heart has angered the decision makers at St James’ Park. And rightly so.
Lille are looking to get as much money as possible from the Toon owners, simply because it’s Newcastle and everyone knows how rich they are.
Newcastle willing to look elsewhere
The Telegraph add that Newcastle will now submit a ‘take it or leave it offer’ for Botman.
That is absolutely the right thing to do. Yes, Botman is a fantastic player, but there are other options out there.
If Lille want to price a player who wants to leave out of a move away then good luck to them. Newcastle found an alternative in January and they can do it again this summer.
There’s no word on AC Milan’s current stance. The Serie A side have been our competitors in the Botman pursuit, but it looked we had beaten them. It will be interesting to see if they’re asked to pay even more too.
Hopefully Lille see sense and revert back to what had already been agreed. They’re playing a dangerous game and could end up with a very unhappy player on their books.
Botman has been very open about his desire to join a new club this summer, and wanted his future resolved after the international break.
This saga rumbles on. Hopefully a conclusion is reached soon, but news of Lille’s new asking price is incredibly frustrating.
