Newcastle United must break their transfer record to sign Sven Botman this month.
That’s according to the Telegraph, who have reported Lille’s asking price for the Dutch defender.
This saga has dominated the opening two weeks of January for Newcastle. Their pursuit of Botman has been widely reported, with the 22-year-old known to be one of PIF’s top targets.
However, so far Lille have been unwilling to do business. The Ligue 1 side have reportedly rejected multiple bids from the Magpies, as they look to retain the 22-year-old ahead of the Champions League knockout stages.
It was claimed earlier in the week that talks were over, but the Daily Mail have stated that contact has continued between the two clubs.
Now a price tag has been revealed.
£46million and Sven Botman is Newcastle’s
According to the Telegraph, Lille will only entertain selling Botman if they receive an offer of £46million.
That’s more than Newcastle paid for Joelinton in 2019. It would be a huge signing by the Magpies, who are now backed by the wealth of the Saudi Public Investment Fund.
It’s now up to the Toon owners to decide whether or not they want to part with that much cash so early into their tenure.
At 22, Botman would be a signing for the future as well as the present. We’ve said it before, but he could be our main centre-back for the next 10 years if all goes to plan.
It’s a huge amount of money, but Botman could be worth it. He could be our Vincent Kompany in the coming years.
Offensively, we’ve got some decent players. But at the back we’re incredibly weak. If there’s money to be invested then it needs to be spent on the defence.
It could prove to be the difference between staying up or going down. And given Botman’s age and potential, perhaps Newcastle should bite the bullet and pay the fee Lille want.
