Making a signing at left-back looks to be something of a priority for Newcastle United this summer.
Dan Burn, of course, has done a fantastic job in playing there since his move from Brighton and has largely kept Matt Targett from featuring as a regular.
Still, starting a 30-year-old in that position is hardly the most long-term strategy. While Burn has played a key role in helping Newcastle establish the meanest defence in the Premier League, Eddie Howe is thought to be keen to move him into central defence going forward.
Indeed, Kieran Tierney is believed to be a target to help that.
The Scotland international continues to be linked with a move to St James’ Park amid a lack of regular game time at Arsenal.
However, the 25-year-old has now been urged to stay in north London.
Tierney urged to prove himself at Arsenal
Former Newcastle manager Sir Kenny Dalglish believes the ex-Celtic star should stick it out at the Emirates Stadium.
“Take the challenge up and see if he can get back in at left-back,” he told the Sunday Post.
“If he can’t get a place there, then he has to see if he can knock someone out further forward – on the left of midfield, or wherever there is an opportunity.
“Kieran still has a chance at Arsenal because, to be successful, you need a really good squad of players.”
Tierney looks ideal for Howe
A player with plenty of top level experience but still room to grow, Tierney would fit the bill with the kind of signings Howe has made thus far.
Given the lack of convincing options at left-back, he certainly looks like a logical target.
While Tierney will no doubt be keen to play more regularly, it still looks an ask to convince him to leave. Arsenal will be back in the Champions League next season and will need a big squad to compete on both fronts, so perhaps there will be more opportunities.
If Newcastle are going to convince him to leave, that would be some statement.
