Newcastle United will reportedly have to spend big money to sign Andrey Santos.
That is according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who has provided an update on the Magpies’ pursuit of the 18-year-old.
Eddie Howe’s side have been heavily linked with the teenager, who currently plays for Vasco Da Gama in Brazil.
In fact, it was recently claimed by 90min that the Magpies are confident they will be able to sign Santos. They reportedly want to agree a deal before the January transfer window, which is exactly what they have done with Garang Kuol.
Whether or not Newcastle will be able to do the same with Santos remains to be seen. And According to Romano, a deal for Santos will cost a lot more than the £300,000 fee that Central Coast Mariners are getting for Kuol.
Andrey Santos will cost Newcastle more than £25million
Romano has commented on Newcastle’s interest in Andrey Santos on his official Twitter account.
He wrote: “More on Andrey Santos: price tag will be really high for Brazilian star, more than €30m. Newcastle are monitoring him since long time — there’s good relationship with his agents too.”
€30million translates to £25.9million based on the current exchange rate. So that means a deal for the youngster will be more expensive than the one that brought Chris Wood to St James’ Park in January.
He was the second signing made by the new owners, with Newcastle activating his £25million release clause to steal him from Burnley.
While he performed well last season, the goals have never flowed for Wood in a black and white shirt.
But for Santos, a deal worth almost £26million or more would be an incredible statement of intent. This is an 18-year-old midfielder who is currently playing in the second tier of Brazilian football.
Newcastle must think very highly of him if they are prepared to spend that much money.
Romano has added that the Magpies have a good relationship with the player’s agent, and that will hopefully serve us well in negotiations.
Given his age and lack of experience, Santos is clearly one for the future. But it looks set to be a very bright future if he is already valued at more than £25million.
Let’s hope that future is at St James’ Park and we can soon see him playing for Newcastle alongside fellow Brazilians Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.
