Dan Ashworth is already pulling the strings at Newcastle United.
The 51-year-old officially started work with the Magpies on Monday, and appears to be closing in on his first signing.
The Daily Mail had reported that fresh talks had taken place over a deal to sign Matt Targett permanently. Now 90min have provided some more information.
They claim that the 26-year-old is heading to the North East today for a medical. This comes after terms were finalised by the club’s new Sporting Director.

It’s an exciting signing if Newcastle can get this one over the line. Targett was excellent during his loan and proved that he can play a part in the Magpies’ future.
While bigger names have been linked, most supporters will be more than happy to see Targett in a black and white shirt again.
A busy start at Newcastle for Dan Ashworth as first signing looms

With a deal for Targett almost completed, Ashworth has been influencing other potential incomings at St James’ Park.
A big money transfer for Hugo Ekitike could be on the horizon, with 90min reporting that our Sporting Director is working to complete that deal. They report that it could initially be a loan with an obligation to buy. That would ease the club’s financial fair play conundrum.
The third deal Ashworth has had his say on surrounds Dean Henderson. It was previously claimed that he was close to joining the Magpies, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

The report from 90min claims that Ashworth has pulled the plug on a deal to sign the Manchester United goalkeeper. They will instead look at other options.
He’s only been in the hot seat a few days but Ashworth is already having a huge influence at St James’ Park.
His recruitment at Brighton was truly excellent, and hopefully he can do the same for Newcastle. Making Targett his first signing would certainly be a good start, even if it is only making a loan deal permanent.
