Newcastle United are reportedly getting closer to bringing Matt Targett back.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who state talks have taken place over a £12million move to St James’ Park.

The defender joined Newcastle on loan from Aston Villa and was fantastic in black and white. He was a picture of consistency, playing in every minute possible.

Targett was exactly what you’d want in a left-back – especially one who has a maverick like Allan Saint-Maximin in front of him.

The end of his loan spell saw Toon fans dreaming of a return, and it looks like that could now become a reality.

Targett talks suggest Newcastle have made up their mind

It had previously been reported that Newcastle weren’t sure about signing Targett. That was disappointing, despite the fact it meant the club were likely going to pursue someone more attacking.

But now it looks like Targett could be the left-back Eddie Howe brings in this summer. The Daily Mail write that Newcastle are looking to turn that loan deal into a permanent one.

Fulham were linked with a move for the 26-year-old, having sealed promotion to the Premier League. Targett is a player they know well, having loaned him for a year back in 2018.

However, Newcastle look to be the favourites, with the Daily Mail stating that we are ‘close‘ to a deal.

Bruno Guimaraes will be very happy

A lot of Toon fans will be buzzing about the news that Targett could be on his way back to St James’ Park. And another person who will be happy is Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian midfielder hijacked an interview with Targett after the Arsenal win and told NUFC TV ‘he needs to stay‘.

Despite some doubts, it now looks like he will be staying.

It would be a sensible if unspectacular signing by Newcastle. But that’s okay – that’s the way it should be at this stage of the project.

Targett was wonderful during his loan spell, and can continue to get even better once he hopefully becomes a permanent Magpie.
