Arsenal reportedly want to sign Newcastle United target Lucas Paqueta.

That’s according to Media Foot in France, who claim the Gunners are ‘pushing’ to bring the 24-year-old to North London.

The Brazil international has been heavily linked with a move away from Lyon this summer. Manchester City were even mentioned as a possible destination.

Newcastle have also been rumoured to be making a move, with Toon fans dreaming of Bruno Guimaraes being reunited with his best pal Paqueta.

But while that currently looks unlikely, they could be playing in the same country at least.

Arsenal could succeed where Newcastle failed in January

Talk of a move to Arsenal for Paqueta will intrigue Newcastle fans. He’s been linked with heading to St James’ Park this summer, while there was also a bid made in January.

The Magpies tried to sign Paqueta at the start of the year, but their £34million approach was rebuffed.

A fresh summer approach from Newcastle hasn’t been forthcoming, but it could be on the way from Arsenal. Media Foot add that they are trying to convince him to head to the Emirates.

Paqueta joining Arsenal would be a blow for Toon fans who want him in Eddie Howe’s squad. And it would be bittersweet for Bruno, who claimed that Paqueta is his ‘dream‘ signing for Newcastle. However, he would at least get to see more of his best friend even if they didn’t share a dressing room.

Lucas Paqueta to sign for Newcastle feels unlikely

Newcastle were heavily linked with Paqueta at the start of the summer. There was a lot of speculation over a move to Tyneside, and that only increased when he visited the North East to see his friend Bruno.

The Times claimed that the Magpies were prepared to break their transfer record to sign him, with Howe making him a top target. A fee of £50million was rumoured.

However, that was as far as it went. While talk of a club record bid excited fans, it didn’t really make much sense.

While Paqueta is extremely talented, he doesn’t really fit what we need this summer. Therefore, spending £50million on him would have been a very strange decision.

Fans have been desperate for Paqueta to join Newcastle and link up with Bruno, but the timing just isn’t right. However, a move might never happen if he signs for Arsenal this summer.
