Newcastle told it was obvious they would beat Sunderland as soon as 26-year-old was on the ball

TalkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino has suggested that one Newcastle United player was at his best again in a big win against Sunderland.

Newcastle thankfully didn’t have to rely on individual brilliance because it was just such a great team performance, but there was one star who was absolute quality for 90 minutes on Saturday.

On talkSPORT this morning, Cascarino identified Bruno Guimaraes as being Newcastle’s best player and suggested he is going to be key to turning their form around.

Bruno was Newcastle’s man of the match vs Sunderland

Everything that Newcastle did so well seemed to come through Bruno in midfield. The 26-year-old was just so calm and collected on the ball and managed to find open space no matter where he was on the pitch.

Though it’s not been great in terms of recent results for Newcastle, the Brazilian has often come out of those games with his head held high as one of the few players who still impressed.

Bruno is exactly the type of player who excels in these big games and he certainly took joy in the victory yesterday after celebrating wildly in front of the away fans as they edged closer to the win.

Former Arsenal man Cascarino was very impressed with the 26-year-old’s performance on Saturday, adding that he knew they’d win when he saw Bruno driving with the ball.

On the show, Cascarino said: “Once I saw Guimaraes get on the ball and start lifting his head and have no pressure on him and start passing the ball around, I thought well Newcastle might be on a bad run but that bad run’s going to end today because they’re going to get a victory here.”

Cascarino says Bruno can turn Newcastle’s form around

Newcastle had lost seven of their last eight coming into this game and confidence was at the lowest it had been since Eddie Howe came in, but Cacsarino is confident that things can start to turn now.

If Newcastle are to take anything from this season which has ultimately been a bit of a disappointment after the overachieving last year, Bruno is going to have to be at his best to drag the team back up.

Manchester City are the Magpies’ next opponents in the Premier League where they will again look to stop this rut of five defeats in their last six which has left them in ninth.

Europe is certainly not off the table, though Champions League may be too big of an ask, but the team have to be at their very best when they head out of January and into an easier run of fixtures.
