Newcastle United are trying to sign 18-year-old wonderkid Garang Kuol, and he was seriously impressive on his Australia debut at the weekend.
The teenager is yet to start a competitive game for his club, but he has already made his debut for his country.
The Central Coast Mariners forward came off the bench in Australia’s 2-0 win over New Zealand, becoming the Socceroos’ sixth youngest player ever.
And Kuol managed to have an impact during his 17 minute cameo.
An Australia debut to remember for Kuol
Kuol was named on the bench for Australia’s game against New Zealand, but came on in the 73rd minute. He replaced Marco Tilio in attack.
And despite having little first-team experience, Kuol managed to make a huge impression on his first ever international appearance.
From a New Zealand corner, Kuol led an Australian counterattack down the right. He started on the edge of his own box, but in an instant was past two players and racing towards goal.
He then played it across the area for teammate Jason Cummings, whose effort was saved. However, the rebound did lead to a penalty, allowing Australia to make it 2-0.
Kuol made a difference on his debut, and is now being tipped to be part of Australia’s World Cup squad in Qatar. Fox Sports gave him a 7.5/10 for his cameo, and hailed his impact off the bench.
“Just days after his 18th birthday, Kuol showed why fans are so excited by his potential. He is simply thrilling with the ball at his feet, always willing to take on a defender – or multiple – and backing his skills,” they wrote.
They added: “With his searing pace and ability to create something out of nothing, he may have played himself into a spot on the plane to Qatar, a possible game-breaker off the bench.”
Newcastle will be excited by what they’ve seen
This comes after talk emerged that Kuol is in advanced negotiations to move to St James’ Park. It was first reported in Australia that the Magpies were in the mix to sign him. Now it looks we will be the lucky club that lands his signature.
The Athletic have reported that Newcastle are in advanced negotiations with the 18-year-old.
And the Toon recruitment team will be very encouraged by Kuol’s debut and the glowing reviews that are coming his way.
He is still a very raw talent given his age an inexperience, but he has the talent to potentially become a star. Hopefully that happens in a black and white shirt.
